1.8 project engine swap
« on: 21 June, 2017, 07:25:17 PM »
Finally got my 1.8 Primera street legal   wanting to know if I can get more power out off the little engine? I got a friend  that is selling a Sr16ve engine out off a ride off Vzr  pulsar  can it bolt it? Will power figures be not far off the 1800cc engine? Any advice will be appreciated

If you have the sr18de it originally made 92kw, if you have the sr18di it originally made 81kw. The sr16ve made 130kw from factory.

I don't know my primeras well, but someone will be able to tell you, seems likely to work.

I have a SR18DE in my pulsar now and i have  had several SR16VE powered cars, On paper the SR16VE makes more power but swapping the 18 for the 16ve you will be disappointed with the outcome, I feel the SR18DE is a much better motor overall, It feels much more torqy and seems to rev a bit 'nicer'

For the effort of fitting a new motor, you will be better off fitting a SR20VE

Big difference in feel between the 140PS GTI/GT motor and the 125PS P10 18DE though, I'd agree the GTI motor is nicer than 16VE, they make more power all the way to 6400rpm, but the base 18DE is a dog.

That is true, the fact that the GTI and the P10 SR18 have a decent power difference didnt cross my mind at the time.

What's your budget mate?
In any case I would only switch to a sr20
Whether that be de, VE or det

It all depends on preference and what your after really. I just spent a fair bit of time and nearly as much money on a 18di.  Using a mix of de and di parts ( surprising how many small differences ) I managed to jimmy up an engine I'm pretty happy with. I havnt had it on a dyno but have driven it since new 17 odd years ago and its for sure better than standard trim. The de with a good tune and modest performance add ons filter, exhaust etc go well for what they are, sr20 anything wins but any engine can be made better.

The 18de is a great engine anyway just when the numbers are stacked up between it and the 20 its a more logical place to start for a high performance build. Good luck and shop around, coby are well known but not necessarily the best. I swapped out my factory di header for the de gti 4-2-1 and it made a considerable difference. I'd need to port the head to hell to warrant a set of flows as factory ones ain't to shabby flow wise.
